Historic recipe from Malinda Russell's 1866 cookbook "A Domestic Cook Book". Page 40. One of the earliest known cookbooks by an African American author.
Dissolve one ounce borax in one pint and a half boiling water; when cool, add one teaspoonful tincture of myrrh and one tablespoonful of the spirits of camphor, and bottle for use.
Take a tablespoonful of the mixture to the same amount of warm water, and apply at bed-time with a soft brush; a stiff bristle brush should never be used, as they injure the gums.
